Back to leadership & Board Members

Jerry Mathis is Program Manager – Postal Affairs at ALSAC/St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Jerry is Vice President of the Executive Board & United States Postmaster General’s Mailers Technical Advisory Committee Representative for the Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers.

ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Jerry Mathis’ employer, is founding member of the Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers. St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The mission of St. Jude is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, St. Jude denies no child treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.

We’ve spent more than half a century finding cures and saving children. Our groundbreaking research has helped push the survival rate for childhood cancer from less than 20 percent in 1962 to more than 80 percent today. View our timeline to explore our key milestones from the day we opened to present day.

Jerry’s Unique Story

As a child, doctors diagnosed Jerry Mathis with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Jerry dreamed of one day joining St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the place that not only changed his life, but saved it. “Coming to St Jude after being told that I had a 12 percent chance to live for three months, and then all these years later being able to work here is nothing but a miracle,” he says.

Before he made the move to Memphis, he worked at the Leaf Chronicle, a division of the Tennessean newspaper based in Nashville. His passion for mail has led him to his dream job in National Direct Marketing as a Senior Advisor in Postal Affairs. In addition to his leadership at the Alliance, Jerry works to reduce postal costs and ensures that all mailings ALSAC produces meet compliance with the USPS. Mathis continues to take part in the St. Jude LIFE Study, in which thousands of former patients return to St. Jude for complete health testing throughout their adult lives.

Leadership

On behalf of the organization, Mathis holds an Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers’ Board member position. In 2015, he was elected by the Board to serve as secretary and a member of the executive committee. And in December 2017, the Board elected Jerry to serve as Vice President, replacing Jim Asselmeyer of Guideposts, who was elected President of the Board of Directors.

Mathis holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Memphis. In 2011, he received the Richard C. Shadyac Award from ALSC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It is given to a former patient that has gone above and beyond to give back to the organization.

In Jerry’s Words

“The Alliance is an important part of ensuring that nonprofits have a fair voice when it comes to postal rates and regulations. It allows you to stay current on any and all postal developments that may affect the way that both for profits and nonprofits business. Alliance membership more than pays for itself, and it helps nonprofits achieve our critical missions. What could be better?”
