Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers Origin and Board

April 24, 2019

The Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers is the only mailer association totally focused on nonprofits, and the only nonprofit association completely dedicated to mail.  We are run by a Board comprised totally of nonprofits, for the benefit of nonprofits.

We had our genesis in 1978, when the Postal Service proposed presort discounts for commercial, but not nonprofit, mailers.  When four nonprofits complained to the Postal Rate Commission, it ordered that the discounts be phased in over a number of years for nonprofits, while commercial mailers would be eligible immediately.

As this still represented discrimination, the four organizations brought the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals.  The Courts agreed that the USPS shall not make any undue or unreasonable discrimination among users of the mails in National Easter Seal Society v. USPS, 1981.  A number of nonprofits were convinced that they should have permanent representation on postal issues.
